Aminul Islam Bulbul, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has defended the appointment of three advisors in the face of criticism and enquiries about whether the action is in accordance with the BCB constitution.
Shakawath Hossain, Syed Abid Sami, and Shyikh Mahadi were nominated by the BCB on Thursday to serve on the President's Advisory Committee.
The Cricket Tourism Advisor is Shakawath, a professional in the hospitality sector; the Cricket Advisor is Sami, a sports media analyst; and the Legal Advisor is Barrister Mahadi, a legal specialist.
Although the BCB constitution stipulates that advisors must be chosen from among the nation's most famous cricket players or esteemed cricket organisers, the decision has garnered criticism, particularly on social media, because none of the three advisors are cricket players or cricket organisers.
The BCB constitution's Chapter Four, Clause 18, permits the president to name up to five advisors. Although they won't be able to vote, these advisors might be invited to board meetings. The president may also choose to include them on standing committees.
"We'll try to adjust this," Aminul told Prothom Alo in reaction to the uproar. The same criteria were used to designate advisors in the past: necessity.
He went on to explain the reasoning behind the appointments, saying, "I love cricket. I don't want to make any mistakes because there are a lot of legal issues right now. Cricket is becoming more than simply a game; it generates income and jobs. Cricket tourism is a major source of investment for nations like South Africa and Australia. There, we are falling behind. We've brought in a tourism expert for that reason.
There was no official advisory committee in place under former BCB president Faruque Ahmed.
