Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is ready to participate in polls
at any moment, even in December, if a level playing field is assured, party
Ameer Shafiqur Rahman stated on Tuesday.
During a 'Meet the Press' programme in Dhaka, he placed
electoral fairness above timing.
Shafiqur Rahman requested the Election Commission (EC) to
prove itself through local elections first and then hold national polls.
He suggested holding elections by April 2026, preferably
before Ramadan, due to bad weather in May.
The Jamaat chief demanded voting rights for expatriates and
criticized the EC's inaction in this regard. He also wanted to see the party's
registration and election symbol reinstated, stating the party would not remain
silent if deprived.
Regarding the ruling party, he accused the Awami League of
authoritarianism and stated that credible elections are necessary for genuine
democracy.
He again called for local elections first from Jamaat,
stating that only Union Parishads currently have elected representatives.
Senior leaders, including Nayeb-e-Ameer Mujibur Rahman and
Acting Secretary General ATM Masum, were also at the function.
