None of the suspects in Saturday's bold heist in Uttara, Dhaka, when thieves posing as Rab officers stole Tk 1.08 crore from a Nagad agent, have been identified or apprehended by police.
The theft happened in Uttara Sector 13 at around 8:00 am, close to routes 12 and 13. Two motorcycles carrying Nagad employees were stopped by the suspects in a microbus, and they took the money and ran away.
The attackers pursued one of the motorbike riders as he attempted to flee, pushed him into the microbus and stole the money.
"We are investigating a number of leads, including potential internal conflicts or irregularities within the organisation [Nagad]," Md. Mahidul Islam, deputy commissioner of the Uttara Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star today. We have questioned Nagad employees and requested that they remain at the stations until the investigation is finished.
He claimed that the CCTV footage of the incident shows that it was a well-planned operation.
Numerous investigative teams, including cyber and surveillance units, are attempting to identify the suspects and ascertain how they acquired Rab uniforms and possessed in-depth knowledge of Nagad's cash distribution procedure, according to Mahidul Islam.
Local Nagad distributor Abdur Rahman reported 8–10 unnamed individuals to the Uttara West Police Station on Saturday night for the crime.
Nine people have already been questioned, including a security guard, two managers, a salesman, and the distributor of Nagad.
The robbers may have known about the cash shipment beforehand, according to preliminary findings. "This information might have been passed on by a [Nagad] employee," a police person with knowledge of the case stated.
According to Nagad's vice president and head of communications and media, Zahidul Islam Sajal, "We are relying on police investigation."
"We are very concerned about the recent incident," Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday in response to news of crimes committed by people wearing Rab uniforms. We're doing everything we can to prosecute those responsible as soon as feasible."
